A Chara
I refer to correspondence received in connection with the above. Outlined below are
heritage-related observations/recommendations co-ordinated by the Development
Applications Unit under the stated headings
Archaeology
The Department notes that the existing domestic laneway impacts the constraint for
Recorded Monuments MO017-021--- Cemetery Site Possible which is subject to statutory
protection in the Record of Monuments and Places, established under Section 12 of the
National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994. Any upgrading works at this location may have
a direct impact and damage an archaeological Monument and material of archaeological
interest.
In light of the above, the Department recommends the following should be attached to any
grant of permission that may issue.
Archaeological requirements
• It is recommended that a program of target hand dug archaeological testing, (rather
than by machine) be carried out within the area of MO017-021--- Cemetery Site
Possible. The Method Statement shall be agreed in advance with the Department. RECEIVED: 29/04/2026

• This should be carried out prior to construction by a suitably qualified archaeologist
under licence to the National Monuments Service. Further mitigation may be required
depending on the results of this archaeological testing, such as such as preservation
in situ or by record, following consultation and agreement with Department.
Reason: To ensure the continued preservation (either in situ or by record) of places, caves,
sites, features or other objects of archaeological interest.
You are requested to send any further communications to this Department’s Development
Applications Unit (DAU) at referrals@npws.gov.ie:
