System design is based on the recommendation of technical guidance document EPA 1993 Wastewater Manual, Treatment Systems for Small Communities, Business, Leisure Centres and Hotels in conjunction with BW COP: 1/05 for ammonia calculations. For full design please refer to WWTS Design Proposal Appendix D. RECEIVED: 16/06/2026 2020/TH/CARRICKMACROSS/SCREPA2009 STINGRAY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LTD. 17 The number of factors should be taken into consideration when choosing the on-site wastewater treatment system, with the main objects as follows: Compliance with national and international standards Supervision during construction, installation, and commissioning Supervision during construction of effluent disposal system Frequency and access for servicing Maintenance and operating procedures requirements Life span of the entire system Correct operating procedures Sludge storage, desludging frequency and access for desludging Plant alarm features and fail-safe measures Capital, operation, and maintenance cost System performance Power requirements Access arrangements for installation General information Plant alarm system Package wastewater treatment system should incorporate alarm system, which operate as the warning device. An alarm panel (audio / visual) should be installed in a prominent location within the proposed development. On remote sites, or where required, an automatic dial out alarm system can be provided Surface water Package wastewater treatment systems are not designed to accept surface water run-off from either the development or its surroundings . Surface water should be disposed of to a purpose-built surface water disposal / reuse system. Oils, Fats and Greases As oils, fats and greases are not easily biodegradable they can cause many problems in the collection network. Ideally grease removal is desirable at source, prior to discharge to the collection network. Therefore, we would recommend installation of large precast Grease Separator with minimum nominal size of NS13. For full details of proposed separator please refer to Drw. 325-C01 and Grease Separator Design Report Appendix E. RECEIVED: 16/06/2026 2020/TH/CARRICKMACROSS/SCREPA2009 STINGRAY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LTD. 18 Manufacturer’s Guarantee The wastewater treatment system should come with a minimum of 24 months manufacturer’s guarantee starting from the installation date. In case of defective system installed, supplier should repair or replace, free of charge, any part of the system affecting operation and performance of the unit installed. This guarantee should be given on the basis that the system is installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Frequency of Servicing Package system supplier shall maintain the system free of charge for the first 12 months following installation and commissioning, and thereafter should be able to provide the Client with an Annual Service Agreement to service and inspect the system at least once per annum. Installation supervision It should be responsibility of the Project Supervisor (i.e. Engineer, Architect or other competent person) to ensure that the on-site wastewater treatment system is located and installed in accordance with planning conditions and EPA 2009 CoP requirements. Package WWTS performance Package wastewater treatment system should be used only in accordance with the design parameters. To ensure proper operation of the system, it is important to comply with the manufacturer’s instructions and guidance. 6. Effluent disposal system Secondary treatment systems require a polishing filter for the disposal of effluent. The polishing filter is designed to provide a dual function. Polishes the effluent, further reducing the concentrations of various parameters (e.g. phosphorus, microorganisms, etc.) in the treated effluent; and Disposes of the treated effluent into the ground. Design of Disposal System Based on the findings and recommendations of the Site Characterisation Report (Appendix 1) , we propose to construct a raised sand polishing filter in the area adjacent to soil test location. The polishing filter should be constructed after the secondary package wastewater treatment system but before discharging into ground water. It is the responsibility of the Engineer or Architect to ensure that the polishing filter is incorporated into the site drainage scheme. All drainage construction works should be designed and constructed using best practice and should only be attempted under the supervision of an Engineer or other suitably qualified professional. RECEIVED: 16/06/2026 2020/TH/CARRICKMACROSS/SCREPA2009 STINGRAY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LTD. 19 The recommended maximum hydraulic loading rate for the sand polishing filters is 60 l/m2 day as per EPA 2009 CoP. The polishing filter can be calculated as follows: Sand Polishing filter SPF=43500l/p.day /60l/msq; SPF=725msq Distribution Gravel DG=0.125*290*31.81; DG=1153msq The polishing filter should be constructed in accordance with the cross-sectional drawing, as contained in Appendix B. The storm water disposal system for the proposed development should be constructed downgradient of the polishing filter. To allow for access and inspection of the polishing filter, an inspection points should be located at the ends of distribution laterals. Minimum thickness of at least 300 mm of unsaturated subsoil will be present between the highest recorded bedrock (1400mm BGL) and the invert level of the distribution gravel 7. WWTS & SPF location The location and configuration of the test holes, WWTS and effluent disposal area will depend on the site topography, the presence of underground services, planning conditions, and on or other factors, whether existing, planned, or anticipated. The test holes dug have been adjacent to green area set within the separation distances contained in Table 2. Separation distances for placing the WWTS and effluent disposal area should be such, that any excavation work required for the wastewater treatment and disposal system does not undermine adjacent features, such as buildings, roads, or walls. Summary………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….18 RECEIVED: 16/06/2026 2020/TH/CARRICKMACROSS/ENGINEERING REPORT STINGRAY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LTD. 4 Introduction Stingray Environmental Engineering Ltd. were requested by Mr. Gordon Mitchell at Mitchell Environmental, acting on behalf John Treacy of the Treacy’s Hotel to prepare the site-specific design and engineering report to detail: Modification to exiting 200PE Wastewater Treatment System for an existing hotel/restaurant at Lossets, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, A81CY23. Figure 1. Treacy’s Hotel Site location Existing hotel will accommodate approximately 220 occupants, 70 bar drinkers and 200 function room guests at the busiest time. Estimated occupancy of 220 occupants, 25 staff and 70 bar drinkers, 200 function room guests per day has been used for design basis. The objectives of this report are to study the proposed water and wastewater load and to design the suitable and fit for purpose on-site foul treatment system. Proposed system to be compliant with the best available engineering practice and statutory requirements. It is understood that the treatment and disposal of wastewater from the development must comply with EPA 1993 Wastewater Manual, Treatment Systems for Small Communities, Business, Leisure Centres and Hotels or alternatively BW COP: 1/05. Considering the existing heritage nature of the development the best engineering practice and the other available European and World standards shall not be disregarded. 1. Wastewater loading rates In order to correctly evaluate design of the wastewater treatment system for proposed development, all details relating to the hydraulic, BOD and ammonia loadings were obtained from O’Leary Sludds agent/architect. (Appendix A. Loading Form). The details contained in Table 1. outline the maximum daily wastewater characteristics. It is assumed that waste disposal units, garbage grinders, food macerators are not in use. It is assumed that all grease traps will be designed/installed adequately to cover the current usage. In such instances, the separation distance should be adjusted accordingly, but it should be at least 50% greater than the depth of the excavation. 4. Proposed wastewater treatment system 4.1 Proposed System Based on the information contained in Sections 1 & 2, it is recommended that a precast concrete BAF wastewater treatment system with a minimum capacity of 155m3 (including freeboard capacity) is installed to treat the volumes of wastewater proposed. System design is based on the recommendation of technical guidance document EPA 1993 Wastewater Manual, Treatment Systems for Small Communities, Business, Leisure Centres and Hotels in conjunction with BW COP: 1/05 for ammonia calculations. Proposed system will be installed as an addition to the existing 200PE wwts. The system proposed by Stingray Environmental uses Biological Aerated Filtration (BAF) technology for a maximum 290PE hydraulic, 275 BOD and 339 equivalent Ammonia loads. An optional chemical dosing system can be incorporated to reduce phosphorus levels if required. The treatment system is installed underground and therefore any noise or odour nuisance are reduced once the system is well vented and maintained. The system works on the principle of a Submerged Fixed-Film Reactor. This process utilizes a biological mass, which is physically attached to a support medium (e.g. plastic), to which oxygen is supplied. WWTS Design Layout and Details RECEIVED: 16/06/2026 2020/TH/CARRICKMACROSS/ENGINEERING REPORT STINGRAY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LTD. 10 4.3 Process Description 4.3.1 Primary Settlement tank/Buffer storage This part of treatment process is used to remove sludge by gravity settlement and to separate floating matters like grease and oils also provide initial digestion under anaerobic O 2 0ppm conditions. Existing holding tank has been utilised for this purpose. Estimated volume of primary storage section 36m3. The large part of the existing storage tank (approx. 30m3 volume measured below the inlet) will create buffer zone. 4.3.2 De-Nitrification chamber This part of the treatment in conjunction with nitrification stage form part of nitrogen and ammonia removal process. The anoxic conditions O2 0-2ppm present in this stage of the process encourage biological communities to form and convert nitrite to dinitrogen under specific conditions. Recirculated mixed liquor is being return to this process and mixed with return activated sludge and pumped raw influent. 4.3.3 Buffer/Balance chamber The wastewater is released to the balance chambers equipped with balancing vortex type submersible pump. The combined buffer volume of approx. 15m3 (part of existing holding tank/ anoxic chamber/ balancing chamber) withholds the maximum estimated waste flow (43.5m3) for minimum period of 8hrs when being gradually discharge on 24/7 basis to next stage of the treatment process -Biological Aeration treatment 4.3.4 Secondary Treatment This part of treatment process is designed to substantially degrade the biological content of the sewage which are derived from human waste, food waste, soaps and detergent. Proposed wwts treat the settled sewage liquor using aerobic fixed film biological processes. The light supporting media are placed randomly into the reactor tanks above the bottom of the tank. The media provides a large surface area, on which the fixed aerated biomass will grow. The filter bed is fully submerged and settled wastewater flows acros s and downward through the filter. Air pump and submerged aerators inject compressed air through a fine bubble diffuser generating aerobic condition with O2 level >2ppm. Highly nitrified suspended liquor then flows by gravity into secondary settlement tank, with some of the mixed liquor suspended solids MLSS being returned to anoxic zone. 4.3.5 Secondary Settlement / Clarifier The treated liquid does settle in the clarifier chamber where any remaining solid particles are collected as sludge in a sump and returned to the primary sedimentation in form of return or waste activated sludge RAS or WAS for further re-treatment or removal. 4.3.6 Effluent Lift Station Clarified Effluent enter this part of the treatment by gravity and is being discharge d further to polishing filter or surface waters via pumps or gravity. In-line suspended solids mesh filter can be introduced at this stage to polish the effluent prior ground/surface water discharge thus extend lifespan of percolation and polishing filter s ystems. 4.3.7 Phosphorus Dosing Unit Optional chemical dosing for phosphorus is available for incorporation into the system without any further tanks. The system will be programmed to specifically suit the calculated loads. RECEIVED: 16/06/2026 2020/TH/CARRICKMACROSS/ENGINEERING REPORT STINGRAY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LTD. 11 Residual Phosphorus P is removed using coagulant (i.e. Ferric Sulphate Aluminum Chloride) pumped into stage prior to final clarification. 4.3.8 Carbon Dosing for Unbalanced Sewage Optional Carbon dosing unit is included for carbon deficiency in the incoming sewage. Unbalanced conditions are often found in sewage for smaller plants. 4.3.9 Oils, Fats and Grease separator Grease removal device is desirable at source, prior to discharge to the collection network. The oils, fats and greases are not easily biodegradable they can cause many problems in the collection network. NS 13 Grease trap will be proposed as an upgrade to the existing unit. 4.3.10 Screening and Grit Removal system Optional grit removal and screening device is desirable at source at development of this nature. The non- biodegradable materials i.e. wipes, rugs, plastic foils, packaging can cause mechanical equipment failures 4.4 General Information The number of factors should be taken into consideration when choosing the on-site wastewater treatment system, with the main objects as follows: • Compliance with national and international standards • Supervision during construction, installation and commissioning • Supervision during construction of effluent disposal system • Frequency and access for servicing • Maintenance and operating procedures requirements • Life span of the entire system • Correct operating procedures • Sludge storage, desludging frequency and access for desludging • Plant alarm features and fail-safe measures • Capital, operation and maintenance cost • System performance • Power requirements • Access arrangements for installation • Package WWS should be used only in accordance with the design parameters.
