Received Doc. - Surface water drainge and SuDS proposalMonaghan Bus Station - Draft Surface Water Drainage and SuDS Maintenance Proposals Monaghan Bus Station Surface Water Drainage and SuDS Maintenance Proposals July 2026 Further Information response to FI item 1A Maintenance Proposals Bus Éireann confirms that the proposed surface water drainage system, Class 1 interceptor/separator and associated nature-based drainage measures at Monaghan Bus Station will be incorporated into the site’s ongoing planned maintenance regime. The maintenance works will be carried out by Bus Éireann’s appointed facilities / yard maintenance contractor, with specialist drainage and interceptor maintenance undertaken by a competent drainage contractor where required. The maintenance regime will include regular inspection, cleaning, removal of silt/debris, maintenance of planted SuDS areas, servicing of the Class 1 interceptor, and retention of inspection and waste disposal records. The purpose of the maintenance regime is to ensure that surface water from the site continues to be collected, treated and discharged in a controlled manner, and that the drainage and SuDS measures remain effective in protecting surface water and groundwater quality. The maintenance regime will include the following items: 1. Class 1 interceptor / petrol interceptor The interceptor shall be inspected and serviced by a competent drainage / environmental contractor. The inspection shall include checking the chamber condition, access covers, inlet and outlet, oil and silt levels, and any visible defects or blockages. Where required, accumulated oil, silt and contaminated liquids shall be removed by a licensed waste contractor and disposed of to an authorised facility. Waste transfer records shall be retained by Bus Éireann. 2. Road gullies, surface water channels and yard drainage Road gullies, channel drains and surface water collection points shall be inspected and cleaned to prevent build- up of silt, litter, leaves, oil residues or other debris. Gullies and channels shall be emptied or jetted as required to maintain free flow to the surface water drainage system and interceptor. 3. Surface water manholes, pipework and outfalls Surface water manholes shall be inspected periodically for silt build-up, standing water, blockages, damage or evidence of contamination. Pipework shall be jetted or CCTV surveyed if recurring blockages, surcharge or poor drainage performance is observed. Outfall / discharge points shall be inspected to ensure that they remain clear and unobstructed. 4. Porous asphalt parking bays and infiltration sub-base The porous asphalt parking areas shall be kept free of excessive silt, mud, leaves and debris. The surface shall be swept/vacuum cleaned periodically using suitable equipment to maintain permeability. Ponding, staining, clogging or damage to the porous surface shall be recorded and repaired where required. Heavy deposition of loose material shall not be permitted to remain on the porous asphalt surface. 5. Tree pits, planting areas and landscaped SuDS areas Tree pits and landscaped areas receiving surface water overflow shall be inspected to ensure that water can enter and drain freely. Inlets, kerbs, overflow routes and planting beds shall be kept clear of silt, litter and debris. RECEIVED: 29/07/2026 Monaghan Bus Station - Draft Surface Water Drainage and SuDS Maintenance Proposals Planting shall be maintained by weeding, pruning, replacement of failed plants where necessary, and removal of invasive growth. Mulch/topsoil shall be maintained so that it does not block drainage routes. 6. Spill response In the event of a fuel, oil or chemical spill, Bus Éireann will arrange immediate containment and clean-up using appropriate spill kits and/or a specialist contractor. Contaminated material shall not be washed into the drainage system. Any significant spill shall be recorded and the interceptor inspected following the incident. 7. Record keeping Bus Éireann shall retain records of inspections, cleaning, interceptor servicing, waste disposal dockets, defects identified and remedial works completed. Records shall be made available for review if requested by the Planning Authority or other statutory body. Typical maintenance schedule The following schedule is a typical planned maintenance regime. The frequency should be increased where inspections identify silt build-up, ponding, contamination, blockage, reduced drainage performance or following significant rainfall or spill events. Item Typical maintenance action Suggested frequency General yard drainage Visual inspection for ponding, blocked gullies, oil staining, debris or damaged covers. Monthly and after major rainfall Road gullies Remove silt, leaves, litter and debris; empty gullies where required. Quarterly, or more often if required Surface water channel drains Clear gratings, channels and collection points; remove silt and debris. Monthly / quarterly Surface water manholes Lift covers, inspect for silt, blockage, standing water, contamination or defects. Twice yearly Surface water pipework Jetting or CCTV survey where poor flow, blockage or surcharge is observed. As required Class 1 interceptor Specialist inspection of chamber, inlet/outlet, oil/silt levels, alarm if fitted, covers and general condition. Twice yearly minimum Class 1 interceptor cleaning Empty/remove oil, silt and contaminated liquids by licensed contractor; retain waste records. Annually, or sooner if inspection shows build-up Porous asphalt Sweep/vacuum surface to remove grit, leaves, silt and debris; check for ponding/clogging. Quarterly, with deeper clean annually Infiltration sub-base Check performance by observing ponding or slow drainage after rainfall. Twice yearly and after heavy rainfall Tree pits Clear inlets/outlets, remove litter/silt, check soil/mulch levels and drainage function. Quarterly Landscaped SuDS / planted areas Weed, prune, replace failed planting, remove litter, keep overflow routes clear. Quarterly during growing season Outfalls / discharge points Check for blockage, erosion, debris or contamination. Twice yearly and after major rainfall Spill response Contain spill, prevent entry to drainage, arrange specialist clean-up and inspect interceptor. Immediately following any spill Maintenance records Keep inspection sheets, cleaning records, waste disposal dockets and defect reports. Ongoing, reviewed annually RECEIVED: 29/07/2026
