Primary Settlement Tank Each primary settlement tank is a two-stage tank designed to maximize the removal of gross and suspended solids prior to the transfer of the settled effluent to the biozone for biological treatment. The primary settlement tank also incorporates capacity for sludge storage. An important characteristic of the Viltra system is the incorporation of an airlift flow-buffering system to ensure instances of peak flow (such as peak season toilet use) do not overload/over-feed the system. RECEIVED: 12/08/2026 Biozone The biological treatment phase utilizes BAF (biological aerated filter) technology that incorporates two proven principles of biological process in the form of a fixed-film reactor, for process stability, and a suspended floc, dispersed growth system, for high transfer rates and operational control, to ensure a stable treatment process largely unaffected by shock loads. The process incorporates a submerged, high-rate, plastic media on which a fixed film of biomass is grown. This biofilm, a diverse community of micro-organisms, takes nutrition from the incoming settled effluent and is provided with oxygen by means of blower units that aerate the media through HDPE membrane diffusers to provide fine bubble aeration. The action of the fine bubble aeration is carefully controlled to provide optimum oxygen transfer rates and to provide a scouring action to slough off excess biomass to maintain the thickness of the fixed biological film at optimum levels, thereby preventing the production of anaerobic bacteria and ensuring maximum process efficiency. The fact that the media remains submerged allows for an element of suspended floc dispersed growth, which ultimately means that there will be biomass which is “unfixed” to the media yet achieves treatment through suspended aeration. The biozone incorporates a two-stage process as standard that allows for constant mixing of incoming settled effluent to provide optimum treatment stability and avoid any short-circuiting. The use of a two-stage biozone ensures a high degree of process efficiency to not only reduce B.O.D. levels to that required but also achieve reductions in ammoniacal nitrogen in excess of specific requirements. Clarifier & Final Settlement Tanks The clarifier and final settlement tank are designed to ensure relevant surface areas and rise rates are achieved to provide maximum settlement of any suspended solids prior to discharge. The OXCRETE Bespoke system also incorporates continuous sludge return systems to recycle “live” sludge from the final settlement tank back to the primary settlement tank. Additionally, this system also provides for continuous recycling of treated effluent back to the P.S.T. to not only provide dilution of incoming settled effluent but also to ensure continuous flow during periods of low or no flow, thereby keeping the biomass in prime condition for treatment. RECEIVED: 12/08/2026 Sizing Calculation Biofilm Process Explained The ammonium oxidisers are mainly located in the outer layers of the biofilm, and they produce the suitable anoxic conditions for the ANAMMOX bacteria situated in the inner layers, by reducing the dissolved oxygen concentration in the bulk liquid and providing nitrite ions necessary for the ANAMMOX reaction. The thickness of biofilm strongly influences bacteria composition; usually, the oxygen diffusion is lower in thicker biofilms and therefore a larger anoxic layer is created, where more ANAMMOX bacteria can live and be active. In biofilm systems, mass transfer is usually the limiting step. As underlined by Van Hulle et al. (2010), as long as ammonium concentrations outside the biofilm are much higher than the oxygen or nitrite concentrations, ammonium diffusion into the biofilm does not limit the process rate. If the nitrites RECEIVED: 12/08/2026 produced in the outer layer are mainly consumed in the inner layer, oxygen is the main limiting factor controlling the overall rate, and its bulk concentration in the liquid is crucial. A too high value may inhibit the ANAMMOX reaction and increase the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate by NOB (i.e. Nitrobacter), whereas a too low value may reduce the production of nitrite by AOB (i.e. Nitrosomonas). Simplified scheme of the main reactions within the biofilm (Andrea Bertino Stockholm/Torino 2010) For the fixed film treatment process, the support medium can be rocks, stones, gravels, sand, soil, wood, rubber, plastic, and agglomerates of the biomass itself (granules) or any other synthetic materials. Viltra uses a specially designed packing material that provides a large surface area per unit volume for biofilm development in high-rate processes; thus, substratum material selection is important to maintain a high quantity of active biomass and to uphold different varieties of microbial populations. The large surface area of the biofilm enables the media to efficiently adsorb a high number of substrates from the influent wastewater. As the biofilm develops on the media surface, it provides diverse habitats so that different constituents, such as carbon and nitrogen components of the wastewater, are transformed and mineralised, thus increasing the removal efficiency of the organic substances from influent wastewater. When the wastewater passes down through the filter media, the oxygen injected at the bottom of the filter is absorbed in the water and into the biofilm. The dissolved organic material in the wastewater diffuses into the biofilm. This biofilm consists of microorganisms which degrade the wastewater into CO2 and water, and at the same time, new cells develop. This process expends oxygen. Therefore, in a thick biofilm, oxygen-free (anaerobic) conditions will exist in the part of the film that is closest to the filter media. RECEIVED: 12/08/2026 When the biofilm becomes too thick, it gets loose in flakes from the surface of the filter media. The biofilm flakes thereafter settle in a succeeding sedimentation basin. New biofilm develops quickly. It is thus a very simple and easy process which only depends on the form of the filter media, the supply of wastewater, and the temperature of the wastewater.
